The HomeStretch program is delivered at a cost well below federally recognized levels for similar programs. Typically, human service agencies report that they save $3 in remedial action for every dollar spent on prevention. HomeStretch achieves a return much greater than 3:1. The program invests about $6,000 per family to provide 6 months of transitional housing and services. Under a Federal Supportive Housing Demonstration Program the same services cost $16,000. With 80% of the HomeStretch families maintaining self-sufficiency at least 2 years after completing the program, this represents a significant return on a very modest investment. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development recognized the exemplary work of HomeStretch by selecting it to receive the HUD Award of Excellence as one of the top 100 community housing organizations in the United States.
